| My time at Entex was well spent learning absolutely everything I could about the computer industry, the applications as well as project management, network design and administration. I left Entex due to declining financial conditions, massive layoffs as well as a general mass exodus in March of 1998 to aggressively pursue my Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certificate. Two months after my departure, my division (NFSO) was dissolved. |
PROJECT: US SURGICAL CORPORATION (NOW TYCO INTERNATIONAL)
I started at Entex working as a support technician for a global technology upgrade at US Surgical. My role was to analyze the individual departments hardware and software necessities and to organize and coordinate the enterprise wide upgrades. The process was streamlined by meeting with every department head, and assisting them in identifying their employees technology needs. The users were then identified to three distinct groups, based on the type of work they perform, and the recommended hardware necessary to support the employee.
In all, over 2000 desktops and laptops were upgraded (from Windows 3.x to Windows 95/ NT4.0) in a little over four months. The entire team completed two months early, very well under budget and praised for the attention to detail, and smoothness of the results. I was promoted to team leader within the first month of the project.

PROJECT: GTE (NOW PART OF VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS)
The completion of the US Surgical project left little time for a break. Entex was consulted by GTE to assist in the migration of the GTE world headquarters physical migration from Stamford, CT, to Houston, Texas. In all, we had less than six months to migrate 3500 users, (over 5000 systems in all).
The process was extremely labor intensive. Every department head was initially consulted to determine their users needs. Every user was then consulted with to identify and inventory the specific software and hardware components of each system. Most systems were to be upgraded or replaced by Entex in Houston - though every one was still physically migrated. I was one of four team leaders coordinating the activities of four to six employees. My primary responsibilities were to coordinate (with the four other team leads) the division of the building and departments, the efficient activities of my team while minimizing the impact of our presence.
The project was extremely emotional for many of the team members. Many of the GTE employees choose to stay in Connecticut, so our presence only emphasized that they were going to lose their jobs. I am sure anyone can imagine some of the long time friendships that were being broken, as well as substantial ties to a community lost in the migration. That said, many of the meetings and users were difficult in their assistance to our projects conclusion. Undeterred, there were a lot of late evenings and weekend covert activities required to get the necessary information without jeopardizing our timeline or budget.
My team completed three weeks ahead of schedule, and well under budget. Our efficiency was over 95% billable time - the best of all the teams, with minimal OT.

PROJECT: NATIONAL FIELD SERVICE ORGANIZATION (NFSO, A DIVISION OF ENTEX)
My performance on the GTE project was well praised and I subsequently became promoted to Senior Network Engineer during the project. An opening in NFSO led me out of L1/L2 project work into L3/L4 emergency admin, high level network design, installation and support for the Fortune 500 corporations between Westchester County (NY), New Haven and Fairfield Counties up to Hartford, CT. Many of these companies had L3 support contracts with Entex for high level troubleshooting and hardware support.
I became certified in numerous vendors product lines, including Compaq, Hewlet Packard, Toshiba, Dell, Gateway, Cisco, 3Com and many others while taking care of some major accounts, including Coca Cola, Warner Lambert, Tri-arc beverage (as in Snapple and RC Cola), Deloite and Touche, Pitney Bowes and many others. In this time I learned what high availability, Nx redundancy and 100% uptime truly meant.
Some of the larger projects I worked on included a Lotus notes to Exchange 5.5 migration for 1500 users, Microsoft and Shiva RAS installations. Domain reconstructions and full Microsoft network implementation projects.
